In the Hebrew Bible and several non-canonical Jewish and early Christian writings, nephilim (in Hebrew ×”× Ö¼×¤×œ×™× means the fallen [ones]) are a people created by the crossbreeding of the "sons of God" (beney ha'elohim, ×‘× ×™ ×”×להי×) and the "daughters of men". (See Genesis 6:1.) The word nephilim is loosely translated as giants or titans in some translations of the Bible, and is left as nephilim in others.
The phrase "sons of God" is sometimes translated into English as "sons of gods". The Hebrew word, "Elohim", is a plural form, but is often used with single verbs and adjectives (as in this case) when the single meaning refers to the "Godhead."
이 용어는 히브리어 성서에서는 창세기 6장3절, 민수기 13장 33절에만 giants로 번역하였는데, 네피림을 거인으로 풀이한 번역은 70인역에서도 발견된다.
현대 영어성서 개정판들은 히브리어를 그대로 음역하고 있다. 이 용어를 어근(나팔: 넘어지다)에서 유래한 것으로 어원학적으로 추론하는 것은 만족스러운 해결이 되지 못한다. 네피림이란 용어 속에는 육체가 거구라는 의미가 함축되어 있다는 암시들이 구약에 존재한다.(중략)

네피림의 유래에 대한 위의 해석은 우리가 성서를 신인동형론적 다신론이 신들과 인간들 사이의 결합을 가능하게 하고 있는 희랍신화와 동일한 수준에 놓을때나 가능한 일이다. 네피림은 창 6:4의 결혼들이 이루어지던 동시대에 있었던 것으로 간주될 수 있고 또는 당대에 있던 결혼의 결과로 이루어진 것으로 간주될 수도 있다.
다른 견해
네피림이라는 말의 정확한 의미는 확실하지 않다. 그래서 이 단어는 번역되지 않은 채로 남아 있다.
